DataLakehouse Accelerator: MHBE Case Study

We performed a thorough Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) to assess leading DataLakehouse products and selected the best platforms to meet MHBE’s specific business and regulatory requirements. After testing a working prototype to validate key features, we provided a final recommendation on the most suitable platform. We then onboarded the chosen solution and built the first use case to integrate data from multiple sources, streamlining MHBE’s data processes and enhancing decision-making capabilities.

The Maryland Health Benefit Exchange (MHBE) is the agency responsible for managing Maryland’s state health insurance marketplace. Through its Maryland Health Connection platform, MHBE ensures that individuals, families, and small businesses have access to affordable health coverage. The agency handles millions of transactions, serves a diverse population, and must comply with state and federal regulations while providing accurate and timely healthcare options to Maryland residents.
MHBE was experiencing several challenges:
  • Data Silos: MHBE's legacy systems created isolated data silos, making it difficult to extract valuable insights and provide timely reporting.
  • Scalability Issues: As the agency grew, multiple applications and data repositories were created to host the customer transactions and touch point data.
  • Manual Data Processing: MHBE relied on manual processes for data integration and analysis, leading to delays in decision-making and higher operational costs.
Regulatory Compliance: MHBE had to ensure compliance with stringent healthcare regulations, requiring a robust system that could manage sensitive and complex data.
Our approach was to design and implement a modern Databricks based Lakehouse architecture tailored to MHBE's specific needs:
  • Unified Data Platform: We created a solution to integrate MHBE’s data into a single, scalable lakehouse
  • Automation and Optimization: Automated data ingestion and processing pipelines were implemented to reduce manual intervention and accelerate data availability for analysis.
Cloud-native Scalability: Leveraging cloud-based technologies, the solution provided the scalability MHBE needed to accommodate growing data volumes and users without compromising performance.
  • The DataLakehouse accelerator transformed MHBE's data ecosystem, delivering:
    • Centralized Data Access: Unified access to all data sources, reducing time spent on data retrieval and enabling more informed decision-making.
    • Improved Performance: The new architecture drastically improved the speed of data processing and analysis, resulting in quicker reporting and real-time insights.
    • Scalability for Future Growth: With a cloud-native infrastructure, MHBE is now well-equipped to scale its operations and data handling as its user base continues to grow.
Regulatory Compliance: The system ensured compliance with healthcare data regulations, providing peace of mind and reducing risk.
